As one would expect in a post-apocalyptic world, everything is a mess. The world Stephanie once knew had been infected with fear, uncertainty, and death. Reanimated bodies of the fallen have overrun the living. Bands of scavengers prey upon the weak and unprepared. Everyone is one scratch or a bite away from mindless chaos.

What one would not expect is the history behind the utter collapse of society; the unfortunate truths that make this story so believable. And my god, what a twist it was!

When you read this, there are definite moments where you cringe and think, ewww. But let's be real, a zombie apocalypse isn't supposed to be a clean story. There are no laws any more, you don't know who to trust, and all of the 'acceptable' interactions between humans are out the window. This book is written so you know exactly what sort of blood, guts, and other unmentionables are being grabbed, hacked, or ripped apart at any given time. It is wonderful, really, to have such a vivid mental picture from a few strings of text.

I found myself getting so wrapped up in reading that I stayed up until the early hours of the morning, compelled to find out what would happen next. You know a book is good when you sacrifice precious sleep.

This is my first zombie book. I enjoy the book but did notice some editing errors. Can't wait for the next book. Definitely a cliff hanger.
I'm a big fan of self publishing and I'm a sucker for a good zombie story. Unfortunately, this book takes the worst of both of those worlds and merges them together for an over 600 page waste of time.

First, the dialog is juvenile. The first couple seasons of the Walking Dead was great because the characters spoke and behaved exactly the way people would in a real zombie apocalypse. In this book, they don't speak like actual human beings, let alone human beings in a zombie apocalypse.

Second, the main characters are women which is clearly purposely done by the author because he takes every opportunity to talk about their bodies and finds any excuse to have the two female leads flirting, kissing, and more. I'm not against sex or romance in a book - but do it purpose.

Third, character development is non-existent. It's hard to get attached to anyone because there isn't a character that you can easily relate with. Back stories are disjointed and not believable.

Save your money on this one, there are much better stories elsewhere.
This was a great story and I can't wait for the next in the series. This adds new refreshing ground to the genre.
I'm not usually a zombie kind of person but the way Mr. Wolff portrays them intrigued me. I found myself drawn in by his storytelling and characters. I would recommend this book to anyone who is curious about zombies and is unsure of where to start in the fandom.
Fresh twist on the zombie apocalypse genre. Every bone in my body wants to reveal the twist...but no spoilers here! Stephanie (main character) develops over the course of reading the book quite nicely, and I genuinely cared what would happen next to her. In fact, Wolff needs to hurry up with the second installment!!!

Romance, companionship, gore, humor, suspense, betrayal, violence...this book has it all!
amazing book ! I will write full review soon, but I just needed to post something and say how amazing this book is, its so hard to put down. Its got some neat& sneaky twists and amazingly lovable characters. A lot of work was put in this book! The author is a very sweet and hardworking man with a great talent for writing. Ive been nothing but impressed with this book and I CANNOT WAIT FOR BOOK TWO !!!

I'm always a bit reluctant to leave book reviews because enjoyment of a book is so subjective. But the world is constantly in need of new authors working hard to deliver quality content... and we need to encourage those people to bring their talent to the table.

I'm giving Self-Aware five stars because I enjoyed the time I spent reading it. That's what I read a book for - enjoyment of the story. And Mr. Wolff told a GOOD story. It was compelling, it pulled me in, and he made me care about the characters. Sympathizing with a zombie, even! Who knew?!?!

I also think that Mr. Wolff did an excellent job of putting a fresh spin on a genre that has become dominated by The Walking Dead. That's what an author writing about zombies is up against. And most authors (or TV shows) are focusing entirely on the trial and tribulations of the survivors of a zombie apocalypse.
