i found this novel intriguing and it prodded me to read further each day. I was in awe of the protagonist and her many trials in her new life in a hostile, harsh world. She suffered many times but she prevailed and came out a stronger woman.I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys historical novels!

9-26-14 An easy read book of adventure, intrigue and mystery. This fast moving book describes the self confidence of a very young traveler, who has unfortunate losses in life, but remained positive. Living in the1600's in Quebec were difficult and line by line I felt that i was actually there. A few times I actually gasped out loud only to be comforted by a heavenly intervention. It was encouraging to know of the fulfillment that eventually came to those who worked so hard.
The first paragraph of this story was all that was needed to grab my attention. What an amazing story of Marie Pontonnier's brave decision to leave all that was known to her in France behind to begin her new life as a young 13 year old orphan in the wilds of Canada in the mid 1600s. The book tells a tale of the many perils facing the early French colonists and their determination to forge lives in the wilderness. Neither the freezing temperatures of winter nor the vicious attacks of the Iroquois dissuaded them. Relying on their faith in God and each other for support they proved that they could overcome the risks.
I enjoyed this book very much. I have three Fille du Roi's in my family tree and am always looking for information on the daily lives of the brave men and women who founded New France.
Marie Pontonnier was my ninth great grandmother. It was great to read such a comprehensive overview of her life. And the names of others in the book who are related to me and their part in her life.
I loved the way this book use written. This is my 9 great grandmother. I felt I was there in her time. Finished the book in a day is was so interesting.
Both my parent's ancestors came from France via Canada in the 1600's, the time period of the story about Marie Pontonnier. The way Carol Cote filled in the history with an fast moving drama gave me a good picture of what they lived thru. A strong faith, lots of love, and a positive attitude makes this a great read and encouragement. The surprise for me was that she was my 7th great grandmother, too.
Marie Pontonnier was great! It is the story of my (many times) great grandmother. I will pass this story onto my daughters and grandchildren.
