Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings An American Controversy Annette GordonReed Books

Gordon-Reed's work is well-structured, analytical and thorough. Her arguments are sensible and convincing. It is a shame that some authors (here I am thinking of M. Andrew Holowchak's Framing a Legend) have made sophomoric attempts to cast Gordon-Reed's arguments as nothing more than racially-motivated. I am a white guy and I think she make 1,000% more sense than Holowchak.

Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings An American Controversy Annette GordonReed Books Reviews

great info on history every one should read
Not quite finished with it, but I have learned so much of our history. Combined with ‘I, Elisa Hamilton’ it is quite a historical grounding and look at women’s lives during and after the Revolution.
Enlightening beyond measure...brilliant! Ms. Annette Gordon-Reed, thank you.
I found this book really interesting. I thought that the author made good arguments for her conclusion. The book was written before the DNA evidence showed that Thomas Jefferson was the most likely father of Sally's children. A thought provoking book showing how relationships can't be normal when a system of slavery exists. Besides the obvious statement that owning another person is wrong, any truly loving relationship must remain hidden. Sally's sister, Mary, asked Jefferson to sell her to a white neighbor because they loved one another. Jefferson did sell her to the neighbor - although they lived as a married couple, the only legal arrangement that they were allowed to have in Virginia at that time was as owner and slave. We can't really know what Thomas and Sally felt about each other because any evidence in the form of letters or written journals, etc. seem to have been destroyed by Jefferson. However, Annette Gordon-Reed suggests an agreement between them, affection and trust, too, by Jefferson's actions in the freeing of their children and the fact that they (at least the sons) all played the violin.
Excellent research and critique of the implicit assumptions and biases, prejudices and blindspots of prior historians of the Jefferson story. Gordon-Reed is clearly reading history against the grain, and engaging in the pursuit of the truth. Highly recommend.
I hesitated to purchase this book, since I'd already read Gordon-Reed's "The Hemmingses of Monticello," and thought I might find it redundant. But this book is completely different it is a lawyerly examination of the historical record and the many 19th and 20th century Jefferson biographers who have ignored or denigrated the story told here. The author rightly addresses the racism and shoddy evaluation of source materials evidenced by many Jefferson biographer/idolators. I found it both fascinating and persuasive.
Ms. Gordon-Reed has laid out a detailed exposition of the pros and cons about Jefferson's being the father big Sally Heming's children. I would add one more pro it was the custom! All the white off-spring seen in slave country shows this to be true. Read the 1937 WPA interviews with former slaves who readily state their parentage. It is rank hypocrisy to deny the existence of race mixing.
