This is the first book I've read by author J.M. Stewart, and I am reaching back and kicking myself in the butt. I loved this story. From the onset of the first word, I was drawn into the lives of the characters in Her Knight in Black Leather, and throughout the read fell just as deeply in love with them as they did with each other. Stewart created a work of art by crafting a modern day Romeo and Juliet, except the hero and heroine are battling mistakes made in the past (by themselves or close family) that have directed the course of their lives and, ultimately, are the defining factors that keep them apart. Both characters know a future is impossible. Doesn't matter. They are still drawn to each other with a fierce yearning that literally leaps off the page. And consequently the reader is aching right along with them. I highly recommend this one to readers of romance, and for those of you who are authors...take note. The emotional element Ms. Stewart creates in this story is something we should all strive to emulate. Well done and I can't wait to read more from this author.

I found this book on the Daily Deals. I'm never sure what I'm going to get with "bargain books", but it sounded interesting. And it was. It was a cute romantic story. The characters were engaging and it was well written.

Cat is spending the evening at the local bar with her roommate, trying to get over her cheating ex-fiance, when she is rescued from a drunk with wandering hands. Her Knight in Black Leather, turns out to be Michael Brant. Someone who is more than the bad boy he appears to be. Under all that leather, is a smart, caring gentleman.

Their chance meeting turns into a very romantic and hot night together. But neither one of them are ready for more than that one night. But when pictures of the two of them start showing up in the local paper, and Cat starts getting threatening phone calls, Michael makes it his personal mission to see that no harm comes to Cat.

The more time they spend together, the more they are falling for each other. But each of them is harboring secrets. Secrets that each have been hanging on to for years. Secrets that when finally exposed, could send each of them running in the opposite direction, wanting nothing to do with the other.

This was a quick, easy read. A nice change of pace from the things I usually read.
I was pleasantly surprised with this read as I usually groan with a love-at-first-sight relationship arc. Many authors miss the boat, but she handled it intelligently and with believable emotional motivations. In reading the author’s bio, she strives for sweet and spicy romance, and she achieved it nicely in this book.

The good = 1) Believable reactions to each other, creating a feeling of an authentic relationship.

2) The character’s emotional baggage matched the background story and each took realistic steps to deal with it by story’s end.

3) Love that Michael’s bad boy persona is laced with sweet chivalry and not just possessiveness. Again, it’s difficult to pull off a tender alpha male, but the author succeeded.

4) Standard fare of wallflower heroine coming out of her shell, but I like that Cat’s decisions don’t stem from shyness but from her backstory.

The disappointing = 1) Needed to develop a stronger reason why Cat feels like she can’t leave home. You get her 2-3 sentence explanation almost at the end of the book but it wasn’t compelling enough. Even her dad’s reaction could be paraphrased as “Huh? That’s silly.” As a result, the what-should-she-do conflict felt artificial.

2) We are told Michael’s family is big and powerful, which is why Michael makes decisions to protect Cat, but we don’t get any evidence as to why that really makes a difference. (Classic “show v tell” problem) Why won’t anyone mess with Michael’s dad? What can he provide that the police, security guards or Michael can’t? Because the “so what” isn’t fleshed out, part of the plot felt contrived and lacked impact.

That said, Yes, I would consider reading other works by this author and even re-reading this book again (my personal litmus test to a solid read).
This was the first book I have read by this author...and I usually like a harder edged romance...but the leather jacket, motorcycle and description made me take a chance on this sweet but oh so steamy mystery/romance.
Cat and Michael are two people with big secrets in their pasts...they both escaped their small town gossips and fled for a new life, so when circumstances have them meeting in their old stomping ground, there is an almost instant attraction. They pretend to be a couple to ward off an unwanted suitor, have one night of passion and then when Cat becomes the victim of a deranged stalker, they are once again forced to pretend to be more than they really are to help catch the criminal.
There may be some things that are unreal and far-fetched about this book, but the whole point of a light read like this, is to just enjoy and get trapped in the fantasy. So for that reason, I really liked it and it lived up to its purpose.
Fun, sexy, suspenseful and romantic summer read...perfect for vacation or the beach =)
