Now this one will have you wondering "what on earth is going on here". Very interesting story, very well done as usual. This is a great series, every book a gem. However, I wonder when Elspeth is going to get tired of helping Hamish, one time risking her life and this time actually saving him from a disasterous marriage by a heroic effort on her part only to again have him call the frigid Pricilla while supposed to be spending time with her. Good for her that she leaves him without a word. Again I wonder how Ms Beaton writes such despicable characters such as the young apparently innocent police officer who seems to think nothing of doping people, stealing evidence from the evidence room, telling lie after lie, along the way becoming a drunk. And, I'm amazed that nobody has picked up on the fact that Blair is as much a crook as he is a drunk and that the boss is an egomaniac that can't see what is going on under his nose. Gives a very bad picture of the Scottish police and I'm surprised nobody in that force hasn't complained.

Death of a Valentine Hamish Macbeth Mystery M C Beaton 9780446547383 Books Reviews

Have to love Hamish and all the Scottish humour. Very enjoyable! Good mystery as well.
I thoroughly enjoyed this Hamish Macbeth entry. I must say that I have read most of the previous Hamish books and so am well-acquainted with the characters and the settings. That may have added to my appreciation of the story, but regardless, I truly thought it was a much more interesting and complex mystery than Ms. Beaton usually writes.

Add to that the tongue-in-cheek humor and the outlandish idea of Hamish marrying the policewoman sent to work for him, and it is a recipe for many chuckles. (No spoiler -- readers are shown a wedding announcement up front.)

I started out reading the book, but "read" most of it on audio. This series is wonderful to listen to -- so if you haven't tried Hamish in audio format, this is a great one to try!

If you are a fan, enjoy!
I finished this book after midnight and to sleep! I couldn't put it down! Such a great story. Poor Hamish! I know someday he will find love but his ability solving criminal cases is great. Now need to fix the "bosses"!
if some one wants a good murder mystery with various characters in the scottish highlands , this is the book for you
Habitual readers of this long-time series know a Hamish Macbeth series is always a cause for rejoicing. What we have to ponder here is whether Hamish is really going to get married and who killed the beauty queen at Valentines. Hamish, his pets, and the usual cast of eccentric characters will keep you happily entranced until the end .. . And wanting the next book in the series.
All of the Hamish McBeth books are a terrific mix of humor mixed with mystery, along with the lovely description of the landscape. A fun quick read that leaves you laughing instead of horrified. I'd read more if there were more, but I think I've read them all.
All good things must come to an end, and I wonder whether Beaton needs to end this series? When characters remain the same and do not learn from their mistakes they can become tiresome, and I am afraid that is what is happening to Hamish and the village people. I know at some point Priscilla will see Hamish with another girl and get jealous. I know that Hamish will think of proposing to her, and then change his mind. I know the sisters will be judgmental and gossip...

The book has Beaton's charm throughout - Beaton is, after all, a good author, but I think she has wrung the last drop of creativity out of herself with this series.
Now this one will have you wondering "what on earth is going on here". Very interesting story, very well done as usual. This is a great series, every book a gem.
